Obituary of Susan Jo Altig

Let it be known and to those in attendance, hear! That bright soul known as Susan Jo Altig (Avery), (September 24, 1954 – February 08, 2025) has been called home. Susan, or JoSue as she was affectionately known, was the daughter of William (Bill) Avery and Corinna (Joyce) Avery (Clelland). Susan was born in Winnemucca, Nevada however, she was raised in Idaho and Alaska, often remarking that she was a transplanted Alaskan. She moved to Petersburg, Alaska in 1966 where she later graduated from high school and married Kirk Thomas (Littleton). Susan and Kirk had one son Barry Arnold Littleton.

Susan later moved to Anchorage, Alaska where she held various professions. She attended University of Alaska, Anchorage receiving her Associates in Dental Hygiene. Later she worked as a accountant on the North Slope where she finally topped out on snow. True to her spirit, she packed her bags and moved to St. Croix Virgin Islands and later living in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Answering the call for familial responsibility, Susan returned to Meridian, Idaho in the mid-nineties to help a family member. She moved briefly to Anchorage yet returned to the lower 48 on the birth of her oldest Grandson, Adian. She moved to Salem, Oregon where she spent many wonderful years with her son, grandsons and her father Bill

Everyone who met JoSue knew that she was different, special, and felt somehow better for knowing her. She imparted that gregarious nature to all who would learn. A trait all to rare in todays world, we find ourselves truly at a loss. However, Jo wouldn’t want us to lament her passing, but rather she’d give us a playful slap on the shoulder, flash us jovial smile and tell us in that motherly loving tone – enjoy life. She always wanted people to celebrate her passing. In closing it should be mentioned, Susan felt deeply that everyone had a purpose. She loved largely, she loved adventures and on a daily basis she made an effort to make people smile or improve their day in some way. We were all very privileged to have known her and she will be deeply, deeply missed.

Susan is survived by her son Barry, two grandsons Adian and Addison, her father Bill Avery, her sister Sally Avery, sister-in-law Kim Minder and her nephews Jason, Matthew and niece Tiffany. Susan was preceded in death by her mother Joyce, her brother Jeffery Lin Avery, grandparents and aunts and uncles
